  • Yesterday, I biked five minutes from my house along the Flamingo Arroyo Bike Trail to the start of the Las Vegas Wash. It is a great place to watch birds. . Water from golf courses, peoples yards and other city irrigation sources is funneled into the wash. Just downstream, several water treatment plants process up to 300 millions gallons per day of wastewater from the city. . The treated water is released into the wash and receives additional aeration through multiple mini waterfalls.     The Powerful and the Powerless . Peregrine Falcons are the fastest animals on earth capable of reaching speeds of over 200 mph during a dive. Yet, even with this speed the couldn't get away from pesticides, like DDT, that were causing their eggs to crack before their chicks were born. By 1975, the population reached an all time low of 324 nesting pairs in North America. .
